I don’t like to work in bounds, because when I’m falling, I’m doing alright. Â When I’m slipping, I say, “Hey! This is very interesting.'” It’s when I’m standing upright that bothers me. Â I’m stiff.
Willem De Kooning
As I limp my way back into the blogosphere, let me say how good it is to be at this stage. Â An illness knocked me down over the past six days, and I’ve spent very little quality time out of my bed. Â However, after two doctor’s visits and handfuls of prescription meds, I’m so grateful to feel human again, and, barring any setbacks, will return to school tomorrow (Wednesday). Â I haven’t taught since Tuesday of last week. Â I posted a photo of my studio as it looked when I abandoned it last week. Â I wish I could say that I am painting today, but I am not. Â However, I am reading once again, and loving it. Â It’s so good to be able to focus my eyes again. Â I guess I’m just feeling too weak to paint, to concentrate that intensely. Â But I’ll get there. Â I have the itch, no doubt.
I posted the De Kooning quote in amusement. Â At this point, I wouldn’t mind being stiff and upright. Â I think I’ll do better art work when I reach that posture.
Thanks for reading. Â Back soon.

something kicked me down this past weekend, though i blame myself for pushing my body too hard. if we don’t rest, our bodies find a way to force us to rest.
after they sent photos, i stayed up all night writing the post about my friends’ battle with the ocean (it’s devastating) and then greeted a tour group at the airport and spent four days with them.. dashed home for two nights then to the airport for another tour group. the airport is a three-bus 8 hour journey, btw…
so i wasn’t surprised when my body threw on the brakes and said, ‘that’s enough!’
i think you sometimes do the same; we have so much that we want to do with each day, and reading plays a bit part in keeping us grounded. we throw ourselvles 100 percent into mentoring students/tourits, and we forget to dote on ourselves. i’m lucky that my pharmacy is in the garden, as rx remedies rarely help…
after two days of total rest, i think i’m ready to resume painting. my eyes are tired, however, but my spirit nudges me to roll forward.. slowly.
am writing this via email reply, as the individual pages don’t load well, and comments rarely work thru those channels. hope it reaches you.. mend, listen to your body, and remember to rest!

Thank you. Your message reached me through the normal channel. I’m happy to know you are strengthening now after a slap-down. I akcnowledge that I have had far too much stress in my life these past few months, and my physician cautioned me about that. I will say that painting is not what contributed to my burn out, I have done so little of it the past few months. Today has been very good for reading and reflection. I’m confident that I’ll pick up the brush soon. So good to hear from you! I’m glad you’re better too.

Thanks, Skeeter. I hope your painting is proving to be a good experience for you. I intend to get back to the flatiron building after I finish a commission that is due. I miss tinkering with that building.
