Hello, and thanks for entering my blog

Let me introduce myself as an Unfrustrated Artist with too much on his plate and never enough time to do it all.   One word not found in my vocabulary is “bored.”  There is simply too much wonder in this world, and life is too short to sample it all.  So, I believe the best thing one with an “artistic drive” can do is carve out a quiet, affirming space on this planet, and then set to work doing what s/he loves doing best.

I strive to create watercolors of environments that, in “Proustian” fashion, take me back to primal memories of my upbringing.  My website, www.recollections54.com, is named after my birth year and is illustrated with sights and objects I recall from the fifties that now exist only as relics and husks of what was once a thriving, viable community.  I hope you enjoy looking at environments I’m interpreting and recreating.

My “real” job is teaching high school fulltime (Art History and Philosophy) and college part time (Logic).  I am also an avid fly fisherman, wishing he lived in Colorado or Montana.

When I am not on the job, I thrive in reading books and filling journals and sketchbooks.  When quality time allows me to go “out,” I take my watercolor gear, digital camera, and necessary accessories to hit the road and look for environments to render in watercolor.  My studio space is at home (watercolor requires so little space), mostly in my living room, along the windows on the north wall, enjoying that clean light.  When the Texas climate permits, I use my garage as a Man Cave for watercoloring.

I wish I had always known the beauty of life that I am now able to perceive and explore.
