Hello, and thanks for entering my blog

Let me introduce myself as an Unfrustrated Artist with too much on his plate and never enough time to do it all.   One word not found in my vocabulary is “bored.”  There is simply too much wonder in this world, and life is too short to sample it all.  So, I believe the best thing one with an “artistic drive” can do is carve out a quiet, affirming space on this planet, and then set to work doing what s/he loves doing best.

I strive to create watercolors of environments that, in “Proustian” fashion, take me back to primal memories of my upbringing.  My website, www.recollections54.com, is named after my birth year and is illustrated with sights and objects I recall from the fifties that now exist only as relics and husks of what was once a thriving, viable community.  I hope you enjoy looking at environments I’m interpreting and recreating.

My “real” job is teaching high school fulltime (Art History and Philosophy) and college part time (Logic).  I am also an avid fly fisherman, wishing he lived in Colorado or Montana.

When I am not on the job, I thrive in reading books and filling journals and sketchbooks.  When quality time allows me to go “out,” I take my watercolor gear, digital camera, and necessary accessories to hit the road and look for environments to render in watercolor.  My studio space is at home (watercolor requires so little space), mostly in my living room, along the windows on the north wall, enjoying that clean light.  When the Texas climate permits, I use my garage as a Man Cave for watercoloring.

I wish I had always known the beauty of life that I am now able to perceive and explore.

Hello my friend…I had another sleepless night and was buzzing around on the internet and found you on WordPress. My daughter has me up and sort of running (hobbling) along on WordPress. Iam trying to work on getting the songs together to record this cd to completion. What a balancing act when you get several other musician/artists involved in a project like this! I hope to be able to record somekeeper stuff within two weeks. Love for you to be able to be at some of the recording sessions. Catch you later…Jim

Great to hear from you, Jim. And I’m excited about your upcoming recording sessions. I would love to attend if I could. Let me know when you’re entering the studio. And I hope you’re able to find quality sleep. With all my teaching load, and the upcoming festival tour, I’m getting kind of “short” myself.

Hey Dr Tripp! Dustin Sieber here, class of ’94, Lamar. I was your favorite student of all time. My wife took your Humanities class at TX Wesleyan last year. I’m the one who had my car break down on the way out to that place by Azle–the house a few of us students from class went out to so we could draw that old tree. haha… Anyway, just wanted to thank you for 3 awesome years I had you at Lamar. By far, you were the best and most influential teacher I ever had–and I thank you profusely for it. God bless old friend!

I find myself constantly checking your sight now as I love seeing where and what you are painting. I am fond of many of the locations I find you painting at and love seeing you interpretations of places I too have seen. I would like to know if the piece you did that Saturday in McKinney of our home at 508 Tucker is for sale. Please let me know if you revisit our favorite work in progress.

      Good morning, Lea,

Thank you for your interest in my work. The watercolor sketch I did of your home is available. It is now in a vertical double mat 16 x 12″. In order to fit that standard size, some of the foliage on each side of your home is hidden from view. If the mat is removed, and re-framed to show everything, then of course a custom frame would have to be made. All four watercolors I created in McKinney that day will go on display July 8 at the Garrett Gallery on the square, and will be available for sale. I will be bringing them on that day, and have plans to paint in McKinney that same day if the weather permits. The painting of your home is priced at $150 with the mat. If you are interested in purchasing it, then I would gladly hold it back. Or you may wish to visit the gallery and see it first. At any rate, thank you again for your interest, and I would be happy to answer any further questions. On July 10, from 7:00-10:00, there is a reception at the Garrett Gallery. I will be at that reception, and would love to meet you, if you attend. All watercolors from that Southwestern Watercolor Society Paint Out day will be on display and for sale. The award winners will be framed (I took first place for my painting at 601 College Street, and met your husband while I was finishing that one). All other paintings are required to be matted, shrink wrapped and placed in the sale bins.

I am sorry to read that you returned to McKinney on July 8 and I missed this message. If it is available, I am interested in purchasing the painting of our home, however, I would like to purchase just the painting so I can have it custom matted and framed so nothing is occluded. If you are in McKinney in the future, I would love to meet you and talk with you. If you ever revisit painting 508 Tucker, I am very interested in purchasing art of our home.

Sorry the message didn’t reach you, Lea. The watercolor of 508 Tucker is still at the Garrett Gallery on the McKinney square, unless someone has purchased it. I have not been notified of any purchases from that location. If you find that it is no longer there, then of course I could do another work of your home. I would love to do that, anyway. I just haven’t returned to McKinney to paint since that day–the summer has been very busy.

The Garrett Gallery exhibit closes August 12. I’ll return shortly thereafter to take down whatever works I have remaining there.

    Dear Dr. Tripp,
I was led to your blog by James Farmer’s post on “Remembering Ft. Worth” on FaceBook. I have looked at all your posts and love your work. I grew up in Ft. Worth and went to Baylor, so I’ve been through many and eaten at many of those towns. My dad started painting when he retired from General Dynamics at 65. He first took oil painting but preferred watercolor. He took from someone named “Ronald ___, “I think. He painted a lot of old buildings, houses, barns, and railroad depots in and around Ft. Worth. He and my mother used to take drives and photograph things and then he would paint them. His paintings look somewhat like your’s, although he didn’t use your method. Some of his paintings are still in the family. He died at 94 and could no longer paint because of his eyesight, so we are so grateful to have his paintings. I now live in the Rio Grande Valley after teaching 35 years in San Antonio. I was a high school teacher, also (Social Studies). I will continue to look at your blog and enjoy your work. Maybe I’ll buy a painting someday.
    Thanks,

PS: My dad was a member of a Watercolorist Guild both in Ft. Worth and later in San Antonio. Some of his work was accepted into juried shows. He was very proud of that.

      Hello Patsy,

Thank you for looking at my work and posting so graciously on my blog. I’m delighted that you hold on to the Fort Worth memories.

I wish I could have known your father. He modeled everything I wish to be. I too love to travel and photograph–only lately have I taken to plein air sketching and enjoy it much more.

Again, thank you and please let me know if there is a way I could view your father’s work.

Can you send the first link again. I am sorry about this. I will check this week end about the painting. Do you know the address of Garrett Gallery?

I purchased the water color of our home at 508 Tucker yesterday at the Garrett Gallery. I plan to have it rematted, framed and it will hang in our “grand” stair hall. I have a water color print of the McKinney courthouse when it was a beautiful Victorian building hanging above a large piece of furniture in that room. Your water color will be below it. If there is another feature of our home that you would be interested in painting, I would love to have a pair that are the same vertcal perspective and size so they could be hung around this piece. We won’t be able to attend the event on the 11th because of work schedules, however, I would love to know when you are in McKinney so we could meet and chat on a week end. I love your work and I am pleased to own one of your pieces.

Thank you, Merv. Yes, I still have the original watercolor of the UP #844 available, and for sale for $150. I have not yet made limited editions of it. I would sell the 1st edition of a signed and numbered giclee print for $80. Thanks for your interest.

Thank you, Viola, for your affirming comments. All of you gave me a major lift the past 2 days, and I appreciate every one of you for that. Today I practiced what we preached–I painted two more paintings, even though I’m still tired. I’m glad I did. Keep up the good work, and give everyone my best.

Our group so enjoyed having you leading us in both plein air and studio. Please come again. We all got so many good ideas and most of all, pleasing instruction with “soft criticism”. Thanks for sharing your heart and passion for watercolor and philosophy. The combination is most refreshing. We love your work and hope to paint with you again in the near future.

      Lou,
How could I ever thank all of you for the ways in which you enriched my life while we were together? I was fortunate to go out and paint immediately the day after we finished, but that has been it. Between school and filing Income tax, I have hardly had a moment to sleep. And now 6-weeks grades are due! Maybe tomorrow I’ll get to see the inside of my studio again. Thank you again so much for making this encounter such a fulfilling one.

I love the painting of the Gas Station on Rt 66. While certainly reminding one of Hopper, it’s also clearly your own.
